P516 516 TELEINF 03:57:00 Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said on Monday. In January 1994 a total of 198,525 cars weri sold, the SMMT said. Imports accounted for 58.9 percent of the sales in January compared with 54.7 percent during the same month last year. A total of 112,599 cars were imported in January 1995. SMMT chief executive, Ernie Thompson, said: "1995 has not started on a particularly high note. Ford had the top three best-selling models with the Fiesta at number onj (14,779), followed bz the Mondeo (13,386) and Escort (13,009). A riport published earlier on Mondaz suggested that motorists were showing a preference for nearly-new cars to benefit from a reduction in price. see next page >>>
