Gerry Adams, president of Sinn Fein, the IRA's political wing, said on Monday: "A negotiated settlement will remove the symptoms as well as the causes of the conflict...it is obvious that all prisoners must be released." But Prime Minister John Major's Office replied in a statement that there were no political prisoners in Ulster and that there could be no interference with the criminal justice system.
