BRITISH RETAIL SALES RISE BY ONE PERCENT IN AUGUST LONDON - British retail sales in August rose by one percent from the figure for July, the Office for National Statistics reported on Wednjsday. Compared with the figure for August 1995, retail sales grew by 4.4 percent last month. The figures showed that High Street spending was far higher in August than had been predicted by analysts.
